Colour temperature or white balance is a measurement that determines how warm the lighting is and, by extension, how things appear in the image. Warm light appears more orange, and cold light appears more blueish
tungsten
Tungsten is a relatively warm light, sitting between 2700 and 3200. Its name comes from tungsten halogen lights, which use a tungsten filament
daylight
Daylight is a colder light between 6500 and 5500K; it's relatively blue
Whilst you should try and match your camera's white balance to the colour temperature of the lighting in a room you can activelty craft an image you want to create by changing the white balance for example using a setting that makes the lighting appear warmer than it actually is can help set a different tone however for photos it would often be better to do after in post
